Crotto Ombra Restaurant
Nature has made a singular gift to the Valchiavenna: in the natural galleries of its mountains, from immemorial time it has blown the ‘sorel’, a mysterious breeze with a constant temperature of 8°C. The valley inhabitants have built ‘Crotti’ at the entrance to the largest of these tunnels.
In the ‘Crotti’ people gather with friends and to pass the time in joy they drink good wine accompanied by some of the gastronomic specialities of the valley: bresaola, “violins”, cheese.
The rooms of the ancient Crotto Ombra, the best known of the crotti still existing in Pratogiano di Chiavenna, now house our restaurant, a gastronomic destination for lovers of good food, where you can taste the dishes of the simplest and oldest Valchiavenna gastronomic tradition: from the Brisaola to the white pizzoccheri, from mixed meat to trout (all cooked on the piota - the stone slab that serves as a grill), to close with the Biscottini di Prosto and the rustic cake made of buckwheat and blueberry sauce. At the end of the meal, a visit to the crotto containing thousands of ripening cheese wheels is not to be missed.
